Our organic Red Reishi "Antlers"--a specific form of Reishi that is the result of unique growing conditions--look different from most forms people are familiar with, but they are actually the same mushroom as those large "conch" or fan-shaped Reishi mushrooms. What really makes our Reishi special is that they are 100% Certified Organic and grown on our farm in Bellingham, WA. Most Reishi on the market are imported from growers which may or may not be using chemical applications on their mushrooms or are growing in contaminated environments. We believe that the best medicinal mushrooms come from clean, natural settings. Our farm is the next step from finding your own Reishi growing in the wild. We never use any chemicals in our growing practices and all of our substrate materials are Certified Organic and locally sourced.

Reishi mushroom is a fungus that holds an important place in the traditional medical systems of China, Japan, Korea and other Asian countries for its health-promoting effects. It is used as an immunostimulant by patients with AIDS and cancer. The active constituents include both beta-glucan polysaccharides and triterpenes (46) (47).

For thousands of years, reishi mushrooms have been revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine for their adaptogenic and healthful qualities. At one time, the esteemed fungi, Ganoderma lucidum, was reserved for the ruling class. Present day, it can be found in herb cabinets worldwide. Our whole organic reishi mushroom tops can be decocted as large batches of reishi mushroom tea or extract.

Reishi has been cited thousands of years ago in several texts and scripts as being a tonic for emperors. At one time this mushroom was specifically used under the prestigious vestiges of the ruling class, but it has since made its way into the pantries of us common folk. Traditional and contemporary Chinese medicine admire it as a tonic benefiting vital energy or "Qi". Reishi is a polypore mushroom, growing in damp, dark forests and the occasional rotting log. Modern day demand has forced its cultivation in Japan, China and the United States which is promising for the wild stands of Reishi.

Throughout a wide array of cultures, spanning across centuries, these mushrooms have been used as an answer to many different health benefits, the main ones being immune enhancement and stress defence.

Typically found at the base of hardwood trees, Reishi mushrooms are a white parasitic fungus that grows in North America (central Canada and the North-East United States) in late Spring to early Fall, as well as in warmer regions like Asia and the South Pacific.

Reishi mushrooms can look slightly different from each other depending on the species, but typically all have a white outer ring surrounding a glossy reddish cap and stem. Known as a staple in Eastern cultures, Reishi mushrooms have been associated with a variety of benefits, from supporting gut health to providing hydration for the skin.* They are perhaps most well-known for supporting a healthy immune system and for helping to balance mood and facilitate a sense of inner harmony. Taoist monks have revered Reishi mushrooms for centuries for their zen-like properties.

Reishi mushrooms are known to be high in polysaccharides, which are known to provide immune system and gut flora support. They can stimulate white blood cells to help fight off viruses to keep the body running at full tilt.*

Because of the unpleasant texture and taste, Reishi mushrooms are best consumed in a powdered form, which is helpful when searching for them because Reishi mushroom powder is arguably the most common type of Reishi. It can be purchased from a variety of stores and online shops.

Most people consume Reishi mushroom powder daily for immune and sleep support. Often taken in the evening to wind down, Reishi mushroom powder can be mixed with any warm liquid to create a soothing beverage.

Reishi mushrooms are among several medicinal mushrooms that have been used for hundreds of years, mainly in Asian countries, for treatment of infections. More recently, they have also been used in the treatment of pulmonary diseases and cancer. Medicinal mushrooms have been approved adjuncts to standard cancer treatments in Japan and China for more than 30 years and have an extensive clinical history of safe use as single agents or combined with chemotherapy.

There is some scientific evidence of its effectiveness, including lab research and some small human studies. Researchers are beginning to look at the chemical makeup of this mushroom to better understand how and whether it really works for each of these conditions.

Risks. Taking reishi mushroom may be riskier if you have low blood pressure or are taking therapy to raise your blood pressure, are taking diabetes medications, or have immune system disorders or medications.

Hepatotoxic effect related to Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi) mushroom powder was first described in a patient from Hong Kong in 2004. In 2005, the authors experienced a case of fatal fulminant hepatitis associated with such a preparation. Both patients had taken other therapeutic agents and traditionally boiled Lingzhi without any toxic effect. After switching to taking Lingzhi in powder form for 1-2 months, the hepatotoxic episode occurred in both patients. The toxic role of Lingzhi powder needs close monitoring in the future, especially in combination with other drugs.

Reishi mushrooms have antioxidant properties that help nourish, detoxify and protect the liver. These antioxidant properties reduce the effects of free radicals that can slow down liver function. Reishi can help renew liver cells, strengthen the liver and improve the detox process.

Reishi contain ganoderic acid. Ganoderic acid is a triterpene that inhibits the release of histamines. Histamines cause allergic reactions. Research also shows that oleic acid in reishi mushrooms inhibit histamine release to help control allergies.

Note: If you do want to give your dog whole reishi mushrooms, be sure to cook them thoroughly. Raw mushrooms are very indigestible and may be toxic to dogs. Making a tea or soup is a good way to feed fresh or dried mushrooms.

A mushroom a day may keep the doctor away. The active ingredients in a Asian mushroom can change bacteria in your stomach for the better, researchers have found. By altering gut bacteria, the Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) prevents and reverses symptoms of obesity in mice, including weight gain and insulin resistance.

Ojcius and colleagues from Chang Gung University and Chang Gung Biotechnology in Taiwan treated mice kept on a high-fat diet with various compounds from Reishi mushrooms, called polysaccharides, to see which ingredient played the biggest role. The ratio of two different types of gut bacteria, firmicutes and bacteroidetes, can indicate gut health, Ojcius said. In this case, a subset of the polysaccharides from the Reishi mushroom altered the bacterial ratio in favor of a healthier gut.
